I’ve experienced the transformative power of personal narrative so many times through my work with students over the years that its magic no longer surprises me. I’m now so convinced of its life-changing properties that I believe that writing and sharing the stories we need to tell is the secret to our inner peace and external power.
I first uncovered this truth when I wrote my way through the trauma of my childhood in my coming of age memoir, Hippie Boy: A Girls Story. I experienced it again when I wrote out my painful journey with a blinding eye disease in my short memoir, Focus. And it’s now helping me to process the crushing loss of my Dad to a multi-million dollar con that consumed him and ultimately cost him his life.
It’s our personal stories that connect us, that foster empathy and understanding, that help us all realize that we are not alone. And it’s through the transformative power of personal narrative that we are able to process our experiences, reclaim our power and turn our adversity into an asset that can help others.
That’s what Marta and Michelle are doing with their powerful new podcast: The Fallout Chronicles, in which both women are turning their pain and struggles with incarcerated family members into a powerful forum that fosters resilience, hope and inspiration, and I’m honored to be their first guest. If you want to join our deep dive into trauma, adversity and the life-changing power of personal storytelling, you can access the podcast here.
And if you are ready to tap into the healing power of personal narrative for yourself, check out the intimate, five-week Write Your Story: Writing to Heal Workshop I’m offering in collaboration with Revel Eleven this November.
Note: Class includes half-hour individual story structure session with me
