I never gave much thought to the word Disability until I was slapped with that label and told to expect widespread stigma and social isolation. That’s when I understood just how messed up these ingrained prejudices and assumptions are when it comes to people dealing with a challenge that has been shoved under the disabilities label. It sucks that it took losing my eyesight for my blinders in this area to be removed. But now that I see what’s going on, I’m determined to use the power of story and self-reflection to flip these devastating societal biases and attitudes, and help people realize that when it comes to that word, none of us are immune.
