I’m thrilled! Over the past few weeks, IndieReader, eNovelReviews and the Kindle Book Review have all given Hippie Boy rave reviews.
Heres’ a sampling of what they had to say:
“A moving and inspiring story of a teenage girl who rises above the constraints of her oppressive family life. Five stars.” Maya Fleischmann, IndieReader.com 2012 Read full review. Click Here
“Ingrid’s story is amazing..This is the quintessential story of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.” Java Davis, The Kindle Book Review
“Hippie Boy: A Girl’s Story is a stunning masterpiece by a first-time author. Though this is a memoir, it reads like a fictional story, with all the necessary literary elements including conflict, religious strife and character arcs. Brilliant, emotional, and aspirational, you feel empowered and inspired when you reach the last page.” – eNovelReviews.com. Read Full Review. Click Here.
I’m partnering with High School English Teacher Marjie Bower to teach Hippie Boy as part of a writing curriculum designed to help students find their voice and claim their power by telling their stories in a narrative nonfiction format. It’s been a powerful experience for ALL of us — so much so that we are teaming up again for a mini-course in April, when we plan to help the students publish their stories in an eBook. I recently sat down with KUOW Producer Jamala Henderson to talk about the story detailed in my memoir, Hippie Boy : A Girl’s Story and the defining moment that changed the direction of my life.

Booklist, the official review publication for the American Library Association, has reviewed Hippie Boy for it’s February 15th issue — which goes out to 20,000 librarians across the country! Here’s a sampling of that review:
“Ricks’ self-published memoir is a soft-spoken yet resounding reminder of the power plays tied to religion…Ricks’ voice is true, and her prose has a poised confidence missing from the repertoires of many established authors.” Booklist
